We will talk about things like how and when to use the different modes on your camera (no manual mode), how to take better pictures with your own camera, and some basic photo editing using a free program. Last summer, I did a workshop for those wanting to use their SLR cameras, but this one is much more basic and any camera will do.

However, I cannot stop giggling over a few things that happened at our session this morning. One of them involved my assistant Cherise driving a golf cart for the first time. Up a hill. Where is that “P” button again? Hahahaha! There was another episode involving me, the golf cart, and a tree branch, but luckily there is no photo of that.

Also at this session I forgot my reflector, so Cherise had to use a 16×20 sample print instead! Here she is using it to block the sun:

We had other incidents involving rodents, grease, thistles, bees…but the good news is that we had fun, the images from this session are amazing and I can’t wait to share them with you!

I will also give you the full-resolution files of the images I take that night, although I will be allowing the guests to have the good angles and possibly my good lenses, so these may not be portrait-quality images. All models will need to sign a model release (allowing us to use the images online).  Models can be adults, teens, children–anyone who enjoys being photographed! :)

On Tuesday, July 28 at Morrison Institute of Technology, I am going to chit-chat with others in the area who are interested in photography and learning more about their SLR cameras. We will start at 6 p.m. and chat about things such how and when to use the different modes on your camera, how to get in-focus shots, and if we have time, more specific things such as finding good light, light temperature, etc. I do have a general plan, but I will structure what I talk about based on the questions asked and what people really want to learn. There will definitely be a lot of hands-on practice. You can’t learn a whole lot about your camera by listening to someone ramble on about it.

You don’t need to know ANYTHING about your camera to come. Or, maybe you already know tons and want to hang out with others who like photography–that’s fine too. I am going to show you some things I know about exposure and lighting.  You are going to practice on some cutie-pies.  Here’s what you need: an SLR camera, either digital or film. I do have one extra SLR if someone wants to come and use mine.  The best part is, it’s free!

Lately, while I wait, I’ve been looking for good textures. Using textures on photos is not really my style, but creating them does give me something to do while I wait. Here are three textures I found at my last two photo shoots. I did play around with them a bit in Photoshop to make them more interesting.

If you don’t know how to use textures, what you do is place them over your image in Photoshop, set the layer mode to “overlay” or “soft light” or even “multiply”, and then erase back the skin (texture on skin is icky).
