The Most Perfect Dog

July 6, 2009

I’m always amazed at the quality of dogs that end up at shelters & rescues. Seriously. WHY are people still buying dogs from breeders and (God forbid) pet stores? At shelters, you spend less, save a life, and get awesome dogs! I don’t know who let this little brindle whippet slip out of their hands, but they really goofed up because she’s the best dog ever. I adore greyhounds and I think I will always have one, but we are sure smitten with our little Lily! Here are some of her good qualities:
- Lets Evan do ANYTHING to her, even when he does something too rough that he shouldn’t be doing.
- Loves to play! She chases Evan all over the place. She especially loves kids. I’ve never seen a dog go nutso for kids like she does!
- Cuddles, cuddles, cuddles! This dog spoons. If given her way, she’ll sleep in between Chris and me, under the covers. One of us thinks this is super cute and the other of us is annoyed…guess who is who. She even sits on my lap in the car if Chris is driving.
- Remains calm. I’ve never been around a dog that isn’t phased by car rides, vet visits, fireworks, masses of people, etc.
- Has short hair. I gave her a bath and there were only a couple of stray hairs in the tub! Ty has relatively short hair, too, but he sheds like a golden.
- Is quiet. She only barks when she sees another dog. We are working on that, and she’s improving drastically. We are down to just a few whines, but I know she’s dying on the inside to bark!

Her cute quirks:
- Steals clothes. Clean, dirty, mine, Chris’s, Evan’s–she doesn’t care. Last night while we were at the wedding she got into Chris’s dresser (the door w/ shelves) and pulled out a bunch of his t-shirts. She’s currently sleeping on her bed with two of my sweatshirts and a shoe. This doesn’t bother me at all, as she’s not destructive. Sonic used to do the same thing when she was younger.
- Love car rides. Today she slipped out of the fence, and although she didn’t run away, she was playing and wouldn’t let us grab her. I slammed the car door and said, “Let’s go bye-bye!” and she FLEW to the car and jumped right in. Then, I couldn’t get her out!
- She’s always in the room I’m in. I had to put a dog bed in the office.
- She hides her toys & bones. On Friday, I gave both dogs a raw chicken leg outside. I caught Lily trying to bury hers in Evan’s sandbox. That could’ve been bad! Also on Friday, she found a huge dog bone (a cooked one from the pet store). She trotted around the yard with that huge bone for about 5 minutes before she found a place to hide it. She commonly hides toys and clothes behind Evan’s bed or in his covers.

This dog has so many great qualities. Don’t you want a great dog? Go to the humane society today!

  3. [...] Lily, and I called her the most perfect dog. So funny…I obviously didn’t know her yet! (see that post here) But, now that she is settled in and we’ve adjusted, she is once again a perfect dog. [...]
